The Adams County Library System announced Wednesday the launching of its Library by Mail program.

The program allows library materials to be sent to the elderly, ill, handicapped or anyone else who cannot make it to one of the system’s six public libraries, according to the library’s website.

Books, audiobooks, DVDs and CDs may be sent to peoples’ residences, the website reads, along with a new request form so they can list titles or authors to be sent in the next shipment.

Participants can ask library staff to choose items for them using the interest categories chosen when registering. Items also can be placed on hold.

The postage is prepaid, the website states, so the shipments cost nothing for the recipient. Up to four items can be shipped to a person’s house and while the loan period is three weeks, the website indicates that no overdue fines will be charged on Library by Mail items.

To register for the Library by Mail program, contact the library’s outreach department at 717-334-5716, ext. 229.

Registrants must have a current Adams County Library card, which can be obtained here.

The Adams County Library System consists of six public libraries in Adams County: East Berlin Community Library, Fairfield Area Library, Harbaugh-Thomas Library, Littlestown Library, New Oxford Area Library and the Gettysburg Library, which serves as the system’s headquarters. The system also has a traveling library, the Bookmobile.
