Whoever invented the bridge is a genius.
Can you imagine what the first bridge looked like? I wonder how it was even established that something needed to be built in order to avoid peril and gain access to another area.
What were the first points, A. and B., that needed to be bridged? How about the first person who said, “We need to build more of these!” Don’t even get me started on the tunnel.
There are dozens of bridges all over Adams County, perhaps hundreds. Bridges over highways, bridges over streams and bridges connecting municipalities. Some are certainly more notable than others.
Can you identify the Adams County bridge behind me? Bonus points if you can name what municipalities it connects.
Update, May 23
Built in 1886, the John Eisenhower Bridge, or Adams County Bridge NO. 122, connects Cumberland and Freedom townships over Willoughby Run. The steel and wood structure was damaged by a flood in 1996 and reconstructed in 1998, according to a plaque near its entrance ramp.
